Richard started with BreakAway over 31 years ago, working his way through every level of its care system. In 1999 Richard bought BreakAway Health Corporation. There are few other stories of people in the behavioral health field that have displayed such dedication to help and guide children and their families to have a better quality of life. Richard’s personal ethics and devotion, to his work, is a testament to the thousands of families that BreakAway has served over the years. We are proud that our counselors and staff follow the same principles as Richard by helping our clients and their families bridge the gap of communication, heal wounds and find their own inner truths. BreakAway Health Corporation programs are designed with the whole family in mind. Where addiction is present in a family, it can and will destroy relationships. Director of Business Development

Mr. Ludington’s life in alcohol and drug recovery began at the age of 18. After going through a myriad of treatment centers himself, he found joy and fulfillment by giving back the gift of recovery to countless families and their struggling loved ones.

Trained under Dr. John Bradshaw in Texas 35 years ago, Mr. Ludington served as the Program Director for the central Texas based Palmer Drug Abuse Program (PDAP), one of the countries largest adolescent treatment centers. It was there he developed skills for clinical outreach, fundraising, and business development.

It is Mr. Ludington’s belief that together we can all work to increase the opportunity for people suffering from the disease of addiction to overcome their dependences and live a life in recovery, becoming responsible and productive members of society. Mr. Ludington’s passion is to help the hopeless because he was once hopeless. He believes through sobriety, anything is possible.

Mr. Ludington brings years of experience in business development, growth and scaling to not only the 10 Acre Ranch, but many facilities that offer the highest quality of care for struggling addicts and their loved ones.


Clinical Psychologist

Dr. Mark Smith has worked in the field of chemical dependency for over 8 years. Dr. Smith’s specializes in “Attachment and Addiction” where he has developed a curriculum applying the concepts of attachment theory/science to addiction and recovery. Dr. Smith earned his doctorate in clinical psychology from Azusa Pacific University where he wrote a treatment manual: The Treatment of Opiate Addiction Using Attachment Theory. Dr. Smith completed his internship at BHC of Alhambra and went on to be employed there as the primary chemical dependency counselor for their outpatient services. He moved on to work for Solid Landings in Costa Mesa where he developed his curriculum for “Attachment and Addiction.” Dr. Smith has received favorable reviews from clients and colleagues regarding his approach to addiction and recovery. It has led to training professionals, paraprofessionals, and families on how to implement attachment into their interactions with clients/family members.


Clinical Director

Dr. Meghan Marcum, is the Clinical Director of Altus Treatment in Aliso Viejo, California. Dr. Marcum ensures the highest standard of clinical care for each client as well as oversees psychological assessment as a part of the clinical programs. She has a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Arizona State University and a doctorate in clinical psychology from The American School of Professional Psychology at Argosy University. She completed her pre and post-doctoral training in the specialty field of chemical dependency and has also achieved specialized training in treating traumatic disorders with eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR). Dr. Marcum previously worked in the Neurosciences Institute at Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach, California where she maintains full privileges. She has developed an interest in helping those with co-occurring disorders by examining substance abuse as it relates to neurological changes over the course of the illness.


Medical Director / Psychiatrist

Dr Dorsey is a Senior BD Cert Psychiatrist, with extensive clinical and healthcare management experience, including general psychiatry, pharmacological research and substance abuse. He has served as Medical Director/Chief of Psychiatry at multiple hospitals and governmental agencies, including 12 years with BreakAway Health Corporation.
